How to get a study scholarship in the UK?

For many potential students, the main hurdle or problem in coming to study in the UK is the cost of education. To be honest, it is very difficult to get a “free” education in the UK. By “free” I mean entirely scholarship, government, or university funding. But you can get scholarships from many UK universities. You can expect a 10 to 50 percent reduction in your course fees. Also, keep in mind that the higher you study, the more likely you are to receive a scholarship.

Different Types Of  University Scholarships

There are different types of university scholarships available in the united kingdom, the first one is based on academic excellence. These types of grants are based entirely on the grades you are going to get in your exams. To give you just one example, the University of Nottingham offers IB Excellence Scholarships, of course, it depends on the university where you are going to take the course, but just to tell you: you are above average. The second type of scholarship is a scholarship based on the country you are from. If you are coming from a developing country, you have never studied abroad and you are ready to return to your country of origin to make a positive impact. Many UK universities will consider sponsoring you. You can even pay for the entire master’s course. The third type of scholarship is a scholarship based on the school you are currently studying at. For example, many schools are affiliated with UK universities. Obviously, the university will consider whether your success is significant enough for the scholarship but keep in mind that if you have an extraordinary ability, if you are good at any sport, then you Should use it to get a scholarship. Let’s take an example if you have some extraordinary sports skills, the University of Exeter offers scholarships of up to 3,000 per student.

Scholarships Getting Process:

As you can see there are many scholarship options available from universities. Now, what is the process of actually getting them? The first step is research. I think this is the most important step and it should be considered. Some people just apply for university, and then check: Oh, what are scholarships? If scholarship and funding support is very important to you, do your research first and, you need to research whether the university has any scholarship that is suitable for you. So, do your research, check the quality, and are your grades good enough? Are you from a country where you must have a scholarship? Are you meeting the deadline?  Different universities are offering some specific scholarships, for example, Commonwealth woman scholarships.  Maybe it’s you, but if you’ve never done the research, how do you know about the scholarship available?

Step 2 is also very important, but maybe very logical, you have to apply to these universities. So for undergraduate students, about 5 universities, masters, and PhDs – as many as you want, before you apply for a scholarship, you usually have to apply to a university. This is the case for most undergraduate scholarships, for masters sometimes you may be considered for a scholarship along with the application, even for a Ph.D.

You have to make a very strong request. Because not only your rank will be considered, but also your personal statement. Obviously, you are working hard to get amazing grades, so now is the time to consider applying for your scholarship. Here are four key pointers in moving forward with your scholarship application. First is the motivational letter. Make sure you write very clearly, you answer the question asked by the university, and you not only show how great you are but also how you benefit from the scholarship. Well, what are you going to do with your career plans?

The second thing that can be asked is the reference letter or maybe a few of them can be asked. So, you have to think about who you are going to ask for a letter of reference, make sure that this person knows the format of the letter that is needed, they speak good English, they know you well and they know about your career plans. 

The third thing you may want to do is attend a university interview. This can be done via Skype, by calling, or by an in-person meeting. There are many aspects to success in an interview, so I’m sure you’ll do your research, and I can’t cover that whole topic. But make sure you prepare all these in advance.

The last thing they can ask for is the financial documents. Truth be told, there aren’t many scholarships available to financially strapped students these days. But if you are struggling financially, it can help. So, ask the universities if they need any proof of your financial struggle, but it can’t help you as much as most universities. Scholarships are based on educational qualifications only.
